Every official Buffalo Trace distillery tour is free — and reservations open eight weeks out and vanish. This guide compares the free tours with the paid Louisville bourbon days that bundle Buffalo Trace with Woodford Reserve, Four Roses and transport, so you can pick the way in that fits your dates.
Quick answer
The distillery's own tours — Trace Tour, Old Taylor Tour, Hard Hat Tour — cost nothing, but slots open eight weeks ahead and the good ones go fast. If your dates are close or you are starting from Louisville without a car, a paid tour is the practical route: the $189 three-distillery day with 660+ reviews pairs Buffalo Trace with Woodford Reserve and Four Roses, and private groups can design their own trail from $1,600 per vehicle. The distillery is in Frankfort, about 50 miles east of Louisville.
Key takeaways
These tours depart from Louisville (one from Lexington), include transport and admissions, and put Buffalo Trace on the itinerary alongside one or two other distilleries. Booking, payment and cancellation are handled by Viator; prices, ratings and review counts were read from the listings.
The workhorse of the Louisville bourbon day tours: Buffalo Trace, Woodford Reserve and Four Roses in one 9-to-10-hour loop with 661 reviews behind it. Admissions included where charged.
Group day tour where the van votes on the combination — Maker's Mark, Buffalo Trace, Woodford or others. Nine hours from Louisville with tastings at each stop.
Buffalo Trace plus two more distilleries in an eight-hour small-group day. A detailed itinerary lands after booking; start times shift with the distilleries drawn.
B&C's flagship nine-hour bourbon day, rated 5.0 across 90 reviews. Two to three distilleries with lunch stop and hotel pickup from Louisville.
Half bourbon, half Derby: a guided Buffalo Trace visit paired with Churchill Downs racetrack in a six-hour day — the Kentucky double bill.
Ten hours through the craft side of the trail — hidden distilleries most vans skip, capped group, tastings throughout. For second-visit bourbon travellers.
Buffalo Trace in the morning, a working Kentucky horse farm in the afternoon — the two things the state does best in one eight-hour premium day.
The column that decides it is the distillery list. Every tour here clears the Buffalo Trace reservation problem for you — the operator holds the slots — so what you are really choosing is which other distilleries ride along and how long the day runs.

Prices are per person. All seven include vehicle transport from Louisville or Lexington and distillery admissions where the distillery charges one; Buffalo Trace itself never charges.

The free route works beautifully if you plan ahead and have a car. Reservations open on the distillery's website eight weeks out; the Trace Tour (75 to 90 minutes, production overview plus tasting) is the right first visit, the Old Taylor Tour covers the historic side in 75 minutes, and the Hard Hat Tour (90 to 105 minutes) walks you closest to live production. All of them end in a tasting and none of them costs a cent. The catch is the calendar: weekend slots and the Hard Hat Tour disappear almost as soon as they open, and the distillery is a 50-mile drive from Louisville with no public transport that gets you there.
The paid route trades money for certainty and coverage. A three-distillery day from Louisville removes the driving-after-tastings problem — the real constraint of any bourbon day — and stacks Woodford Reserve and Four Roses onto the same itinerary, which you cannot do without a designated driver of your own. Operators hold tour slots in bulk, so a booking made this week usually works even when the distillery's own calendar shows nothing.
If there are four or more of you, the arithmetic flips toward private tours: $1,600 to $3,200 per vehicle divided by six people lands near the group-tour price, with the itinerary yours to design.
A walkthrough of the campus, the warehouses and the tasting room — worth three minutes if you are deciding between the tour formats.
Walk through the stone gates and the air changes — decades of bourbon seeped into wood, brick and ground announce the place before the warehouses do.
Distilling started here in 1775, and the first proper distillery building went up in 1812. In 1870, Colonel E.H. Taylor Jr. poured a small fortune into rebuilding the operation as the O.F.C. Distillery, and by 1886 it became the first in the country to install climate-controlled warehouses for aging whiskey. The oldest warehouses still in use date to 1881, and the campus has grown to more than 100 buildings across 440 acres above the Kentucky River.
The distillery has burned, flooded and been torn at by a tornado that cracked open an aging warehouse — and accidentally produced one of the most talked-about bourbons it ever released. Through Prohibition it never shut down, holding one of the few federal licenses to produce medicinal whiskey. In 2013 the site was named a National Historic Landmark, one of very few fully operational distilleries with that status.
More than 600 people work on the Frankfort campus. The craft still begins with hand-selected grain, pure limestone water, natural fermentation and traditional copper stills — and the flagship pour still tastes of vanilla, toffee and candied fruit. Every tour format walks a different slice of this, which is why the tour choice matters more here than at most distilleries.

Every guided walk and every tasting is complimentary — the rare famous attraction that costs nothing to experience.
Brick warehouses from 1881, the water tower, and quiet lawns running down to the Kentucky River.
The gift shop rotates allocated releases you will struggle to find anywhere else — arrive early on the right day and leave with one.
Guides and staff who talk about bourbon the way other people talk about family.
Four private options for groups who want the trail on their own terms. Prices are per vehicle, not per person — split between a full van they land close to the group-tour rate. Listings; booking and cancellation run through Viator.
A private eight-hour chase for single-barrel bottles — Blanton's country by van, up to six guests, priced per vehicle not per seat.
Twelve hours of private transportation with a bourbon-country driver — you pick the distilleries, they handle the road. Priced per vehicle.

Private nine-hour Outlaws & Inlaws route for your group only: moonshine-to-bourbon history with the itinerary bent to your taste. Per vehicle.
Not everything worth doing in bourbon country pours whiskey. These four pair well with a distillery day — the Derby Museum and the ghost walk in particular book as evening add-ons after a tour ends.
Kentucky Derby Museum admission with the guided racetrack walk at Churchill Downs — the classic two-hour add-on before or after a distillery day.
Three hours down Whiskey Row: Louisville's bourbon-boom architecture, food stops and the stories between them. Rated 5.0 across 59 reviews.
Louisville by vintage trolley for three hours with a distillery stop and tastings — the low-effort city option after a big bourbon day.
The Old Louisville ghost walk The New York Times wrote up — two hours of Victorian mansions after dark, 1,264 reviews at 5.0. Evenings only.
Six house spirits show up across the tours and the tasting room. Half of them are allocated — sold on a rotating basis, often one bottle per person — so what is pouring and what is on the shelf changes by the day.
| Spirit | Type & proof | Tasting notes | Availability | Tourist tip |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Buffalo Trace Bourbon | Straight bourbon · 90 proof | Vanilla, toffee, candied fruit; mint and oak on the finish. Aged about 8 years. | Limited — sells out fast | The flagship. Start here if you are new to bourbon. |
| Eagle Rare 10 Year | Straight bourbon · 90 proof | Toffee, orange peel, honey and oak; bold, dry palate with cocoa. | Allocated — rotating basis | Arguably the best-value single-barrel bourbon in America. On the shelf? Buy it. |
| W.L. Weller Antique 107 | Wheated bourbon · 107 proof | Caramel corn, plums, light toffee, new leather; long sweet finish. | Allocated — rotating basis | The same wheated mash-bill philosophy behind Pappy Van Winkle — locals call it budget Pappy. It vanishes first. |
| Sazerac Rye | Straight rye · 100 proof | Clove, black pepper, vanilla, citrus, licorice; dry spicy finish. | Generally available | One of the oldest rye brands in the US. Try it in an Old Fashioned. |
| Buffalo Trace Bourbon Cream | Cream liqueur · 30 proof | Rich cream over bourbon: vanilla, caramel, soft spice. | Generally available | The classic distillery serve is a Buffalo Float — poured over root beer. |
| Wheatley Vodka | Craft vodka · 82 proof | Distilled ten times, triple filtered; clean with a soft vanilla finish. | Generally available | Made on campus and named for Master Distiller Harlen Wheatley — covers the non-bourbon drinkers. |
The 440-acre National Historic Landmark campus sits on the Kentucky River in Frankfort — roughly 50 miles from Louisville, 26 from Lexington and 60 from Cincinnati. Castle & Key and Woodford Reserve are each within a 30-minute drive, which is why every self-guided Frankfort circuit pairs them.
Monday through Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Sunday 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Eastern Time — the gift shop keeps the same schedule. Closed Easter Sunday, Independence Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year's Day; Labor Day and Memorial Day run regular hours. Walk-in tastings pour daily until 30 minutes before closing.
The distillery is at 113 Great Buffalo Trace, Frankfort, KY 40601, on the banks of the Kentucky River. From Lexington (26 miles): I-64 West to Exit 58, then US-60 West for 5 miles — watch for the green plank fence and stone gates on the right. From Louisville (about 50 miles): I-64 East to Exit 53B, then US-127 North for 5 miles. Cincinnati is roughly 60 miles, so all three regional airports (SDF, LEX, CVG) work. Parking is free on-site, including RV-friendly spaces.
Rideshare and taxis are limited in Frankfort. If everyone in the group wants to taste freely, book a private car service or a guided bourbon tour with transportation included.
Castle & Key — 20 minutes south, on the beautifully restored Old Taylor grounds. Woodford Reserve — 25 minutes southeast in Versailles, an official Kentucky Bourbon Trail® stop. Wild Turkey — 30 minutes south on US-127, above the Kentucky River valley.
Four Roses — 35 minutes south in Lawrenceburg, known for its ten distinct bourbon recipes. The three-distillery day tours string exactly these together.
Frankfort has a handful of hotels within 10 minutes of the gates. Lexington (30 minutes) and Louisville (55 minutes) offer far more choice — the practical bases for a multi-day bourbon trip.

Yes — it is one of America's oldest continuously operating distilleries, with over 200 years of history on a 440-acre National Historic Landmark campus, and every tour and tasting is free. The catch is planning: free slots open eight weeks ahead and go quickly. If your dates are fixed and the calendar is empty, a paid day tour from Louisville is the reliable way in. More detail in our full answer.
The Trace Tour runs 75 to 90 minutes including the tasting, the Old Taylor Tour about 75 minutes, and the Hard Hat Tour 90 to 105 minutes. Plan on 2 to 3 hours total once the gift shop and grounds get their share. Guided day tours from Louisville that include Buffalo Trace, like the Woodford and Four Roses combination, run 9 to 10 hours door to door.
Nothing. Every tour at the distillery itself — including the Hard Hat Tour — is complimentary, tasting included. You only pay when someone else does the driving: group day tours from Louisville run $189 to $460 per person with two or three distilleries on the itinerary, and private vehicles run $1,600 to $3,200 per group.
No. Buffalo Trace was a founding member in 1999, but its parent company Sazerac left the Kentucky Distillers' Association in 2009 after a trademark dispute, so it does not appear on the official KDA passport or map. It runs its own tours independently and remains one of the most visited distilleries in Kentucky — self-guided itineraries and multi-distillery day tours include it alongside KDA members like Woodford Reserve and Four Roses.
Monday through Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Sunday 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Annual closures are Easter Sunday, July 4th, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year's Day — Labor Day and Memorial Day are regular hours. Walk-in tastings run daily until 30 minutes before closing. Map, parking and directions.
First visit: the Trace Tour — the full production story, the historic warehouses and a tasting in 75 to 90 minutes. Bourbon obsessives should chase the Hard Hat Tour, which gets closest to live production and books out fastest. If you cannot get a reservation at all, the three-distillery day from Louisville includes a guided Buffalo Trace visit without the eight-week wait.
About 50 miles — an hour's drive east on I-64 to Exit 53B, then US-127 North. Lexington is closer at 26 miles. There is no public transport to the distillery, which is exactly the problem day tours with transport exist to solve; tastings and driving mix badly anyway.
About 20 to 25 minutes by car, and Woodford Reserve is 20 to 30 minutes — the three make a natural single-day Frankfort circuit if you have a designated driver. The craft and hidden distilleries day covers similar ground with the driving handled.
Yes. Labor Day is not on the closure list — regular Monday hours apply, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The closed days are Easter Sunday, July 4th, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Hours do change occasionally, so confirm on the official website before driving out — or take a tour with a guaranteed slot.
No. Christmas Eve is one of the six annual closures, along with Easter Sunday, July 4th, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Every other day of the year the distillery runs regular hours — see the full schedule.
Louisville is louder and fuller of bars, restaurants and bourbon nightlife; Lexington is smaller, quieter and 24 miles closer to the gates. Buffalo Trace itself sits between them in Frankfort. Most day tours with transport leave from Louisville, which settles the question for anyone not driving.
Ask ten bourbon drinkers and you get ten answers, but Buffalo Trace keeps coming up because of its combination: 200+ years of working history, free admission, and allocated bottles in the gift shop. The honest comparison is on this page — the free official tours against paid multi-distillery days that add Woodford Reserve and Four Roses.
Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) offer ideal 65°F to 75°F weather and active distillation runs. Summer brings humid Bluegrass days, while winter offers the quietest gift shop lines for allocated releases. For a complete seasonal breakdown, check our month-by-month Buffalo Trace visiting guide.
